About Lake Conway Wildlife Management Area

Lake Conway Wildlife Management Area (WMA), located near Mayflower in Central Arkansas, spans over 21,000 acres including one of the largest man-made lakes in the state. Established in 1951 by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, it serves as an important habitat for waterfowl, migratory birds, and a variety of fish species. The area consists primarily of shallow, vegetated waters tied to the Arkansas River Valley floodplain, supporting rich wetland ecosystems such as cypress-tupelo swamps, bottomland hardwood forests, and moist soil units. This diverse habitat attracts bird watchers, hunters, and anglers year-round. The lake is well-known for its trophy largemouth bass fishing and offers excellent duck hunting, especially during the fall and winter migration seasons. Besides fishing and hunting, visitors can enjoy boat launches for paddle sports, wildlife viewing blinds, and scenic drives along the gravel roads bordering the lake. The WMA also supports waterfowl conservation through habitat management practices including controlled burns and flooding. While primarily designed to support hunting and fishing, the area remains a peaceful natural refuge for casual wildlife observers and photographers. The proximity to Little Rock makes it an accessible outdoor destination for residents and visitors looking to experience wetland ecosystems and abundant wildlife in the central Arkansas region.
